Biography: Alan Farrell was born in London in 1932 and has always had an interest in painting, mainly in watercolors, but had no formal training. He joined the Estuary Group of painters based in South Benfleet and Leigh-on-Sea on the Thames estuary, Essex in 1963, from which his liking for marine subjects arose. His main interest over the years has been in "working boats and dinghies", frequently tied up on beaches or mud flats. He does paint other subjects e.g. wildlife; but there is nearly always a "water connection" and over the last few years has painted many subjects associated with his travels.
He has been received many awards including 2 Honorable Mentions for the RMS Gold Bowl and first place in the RMS 1999 Exhibition for the larger painting category, and Best of Show at the MPSGS 2003 Exhibition. His work is shown in the book produced by the RMS to commemorate its One Hundred Years Anniversary and the Catalogue of the Miniature Collection of the MASF.
